update

Three days with my mom; power outages, flower arranging, cocktails, antiquing, cooking, plant purchasing, brunching, law and order watching, soap cutting, brownie baking. My friend Jenna, [who is about to be a mom herself] once was describing how she came to practice homeopathy...she said that everything in her life stemmed from her mothers influence. That has stuck in my head for a few years. I'm not the type to get to sentimental about these things - after all Mother's Day is a holiday that was created to sell stuff. Which is why i didn't feel bad when i didn't have any cash to pay for our brunch on Sunday. But i have been thinking about how lucky I am to have a mother who is so creative, encouraging, kind and tough. She's like the ultimate side kick, or maybe I am like hers. Either way we make good travel buddies.

Love your work and your blog, but have to tell you that you are wrong about mother-s day: it was a day created by activist to promote peace and justice: Here is Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation written in 1870:
"Arise then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or tears!
"Say firmly: 'We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have taught them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.'
"From the bosom of the devastated earth, a voice goes up with our own. It says, 'Disarm, disarm!' The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar but of God.
"In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace."

Created to sell stuff or not, in the present day, it is whatever you make it to be. Being a good mother takes a lot, to put it mildly. Having a day to let your mother know you appreciate her and all she has done for you, with some simple, and inexpensive, or free gesture can only be good. The best mother's day gifts are thoughtful, creative, and inexpensive. Moms do that stuff all day, every day. Doing it for them once a year doesn't seem like a lot, and it is only as commercial as you make it.

Anon...very interesting.

Too bad it isn't called 'women's day'....then it wouldn't be the holiday when so many folks who aren't, can't, or used to be mothers feel sad.

Sounds like a perfect time together. Maybe instead of one being the other's sidekick you're both "frontkicks"?

Ok, I just read Anon's comment and I love it...I am always feeling if there were more clear feminine voices like these in the world, we could really make some progress! Thanks for sharing that with us.
